One of the most trafficked spices nowadays is mustard seeds. Interestingly, the mustard plant, which produces mustard seeds, is a member of the cruciferous plant family (vegetables from the family include cauliflower and broccoli). The two primary types of mustard produce pungent brown seeds with a harsh, spicy-hot flavour and gentler, yellowish seeds with a pungent, acrid flavour.

On the Indian subcontinent, mustard seeds are a common ingredient in cuisine. Mustard powder baths can be used to relieve the pain of stiff, sore, or aching muscles, and mustard poultices can be used to relieve the congestion brought on by a cold or cough.
